Is the EU “months from falling apart?”

I won’t bang the drum on the European Union today. You’ve probably already made your mind up on it. But even those on the inside of the project know that it’s a make-or-break year. “Europe could lose its historical footing and the project could die quickly,” said French prime minister Manuel Valls in Davos recently. “Things could fall apart within months.”

Right now, Britain’s “Out” camp is bickering with itself. The prime minister met with EU representative Donald Tusk last night in London. The serious negotiations to get Britain a new deal begin later this week, so we’re told. Keep in mind the prime minister needn’t call a referendum on leaving the EU until the end of 2017.

He’s got the momentum now, though. And does he really want to wait for another summer of migrants streaming into Europe by the tens of thousands? The way things are going this winter, the boiling point over immigration is approaching. The EU might have its “existential” crisis sooner rather than later.
