Have you ever held a bar of solid gold? If you’ve not tried it before, and happen to be in London, head over to a bullion dealer called Sharps Pixley in Mayfair. Ross Norman, the owner, will be happy to let you handle a kilo bar – even if you’ve no interest in buying it!
Ross is generous with his gold bars because he knows the seductive power of the yellow metal. Even if those who handle a bar don’t end up buying a full kilo of gold, they’re still more likely to buy some gold.
For when you hold gold in your hand, you can feel the same desire the Egyptians and Aztecs had to covet the metal. Even sceptics of gold often surrender to its mysterious allure once they get their hands on it.
Eoin Treacy tells me he knows folks in China who love gold so much, they like to settle down in the evening and watch TV with a bar of it in their hand! They enjoy the feeling of owning tangible wealth that cannot be defaulted upon. It makes them feel safe.
This came up in a podcast I just hosted with Eoin on the topic of gold. What drives the gold market, the insatiable Eastern appetite for it, the possibility of a “petrogold” system and of course the chaos unfolding in the eurozone all featured. Eoin started out in financial markets as a gold analyst – he’s wise counsel in these trying times for markets. If you want a glimpse of what lies on the horizon before the mainstream gets wind of it, I recommend you give our podcast a listen.
You can listen to it below. We aim to produce more podcasts, so if you have any suggestions as to what you’d like from them in the future, do let me know: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, said of the Greek debt crisis in 2011 that “when it gets serious, you have to lie”. It’s getting very serious in Italy, and Juncker is saying that everything is fine – that “Italy’s fate does not lie in the hands of the financial markets.” We beg to differ.
Something tells me that it’ll feel even better to hold gold in your hand soon. Which is why a subscription to our new advisory service, Zero Hour Alert, comes with a report detailing exactly what type of physical gold to buy, and how to go about obtaining it without being traced. Have a great weekend!
